Restorative Dental care (fillings, onlays, partial crowns and full crowns)

Dr. Guercio and Dr. Herod use only tooth colored bonding materials to restore cavities. Tooth colored filling materials look like natural teeth. They actually bond to the tooth structure and make a great seal of the filling to the tooth. They do not contain silver, mercury or any other metal.

Routine small fillings

All filling materials have some limitations for their use. Composite bonding materials are wonderful to restore smaller cavities, but sometimes they lack strength when larger cavities are present.

Larger fillings: Onlays and Partial crowns

Better materials for these larger cavities are porcelain and porcelain based blended materials. These materials are very strong. They are used when a large section of a tooth requires replacement. A computer laser scanner (Cerec machine) is used to design and fabricate this type of restoration. These restorative materials are milled to an unbelievable accuracy and bonded to the remaining tooth, in many cases eliminating the need for a full crown, therefore preserving as much natural tooth as possible. This more conservative treatment is preferred and is completed in one appointment.

Restoration of very large cavities or fractured teeth

Full crowns are used to restore a tooth when almost all of the part of the tooth that is above the gum-line needs repair or replacement. Crowns can be made of all gold, porcelain fused to gold, or all porcelain.

Full gold crowns are the strongest, but are not very esthetic. Porcelain fused to gold crowns have a cast gold under-framework, and a porcelain covering. This combination provides strength and esthetics.

A new generation of restorative dental materials uses a very high tech approach to crown design and fabrication. This technique uses a Cerec laser scanner to measure the tooth and fabricate the crown. The materials used with this technique are very esthetic and exceptionally strong. The crowns have an accuracy that can exceed that of laboratory processed crowns.
